Council Car Parks Bays requiring a Blue Badge

• Coopers Way Council Car Park outside Henfield Hall/Back of Sainsburys has 4 disabled bays

• Library Council Car Park in Bishops Lane has 3 disabled bays behind public toilets.  Ramp or steps to the High Street.

• St Peter’s Church / Church House in Church Lane has 1 bay outside Church House, with slope down to the entrance to the church

Henfield Village Cars

For over 24 years, Henfield Village Cars has been a friendly, local private hire taxi company offering reliable rides for both personal and business needs.  They undertake airport and long-distance trips as well as short local hops in a range of vehicles including both saloon cars and 6 or 8 seaters for groups. While the vehicles are not wheelchair-accessible, they do accommodate wheelchairs and walking aids if you can transfer into the car.

Event Travel Hub

Enjoy day trips across the South of England with Event Travel Hub. Destinations include markets, historic buildings, shopping, theatre shows and football matches directly from Henfield.  They have 3 different pick-up routes, one of which includes Henfield.

Most Event Travel coaches can accommodate wheeled walkers and mobility scooters under 25kg with dry cell batteries in the hold. To help with entering the coach, drivers can lower the bottom step to 6 inches; however other steps are 12 inches high. All coaches have toilets, again with 12 inch steps.

Jumbulance Trust

This wonderful charity provides transport for disabled people who need specialist care, equipment or support to go on holiday or days out, with or without a carer.  Last year they went to Ireland, Holland and Lourdes, as well as days out in London.   

Trained, specialist volunteers, including medical staff, accompany all trips to ensure safety and comfort for travellers. Coaches come equipped with a wheelchair lift, space for six wheelchairs or four trolley-beds, luxury reclining seats with three pairs of sleeper seats, accessible toilet, privacy curtains for changing, defibrillator, galley kitchen, experienced driver and 18 fixed seats for carers and volunteers.

A Jumbulance can be hired by a group, or you can join an organised trip. Fares are heavily subsidised as the aim is to make travel accessible to all. HENFIELD ELECTRIC COMMUNITY CAR CLUB (HECCC)

HECCC offers electric cars for rental by the hour. You can drive yourself or if that is not possible you may request a volunteer driver. To use the cars, you first need to join the club for a small monthly membership fee. Thereafter you pay hourly for renting a vehicle, with a maximum charge for 24 hours. Membership to the club is open to anyone whether disabled or not.  If you wish to drive yourself, you will need to have no more than 6 points on your driving licence and to have a short familiarisation session to show you the car and assess your driving. HECCC provides insurance for both driver members and volunteers. 

All HECCC cars come with a number of mobility adaptations, such as slideboards that can be fitted on the side of the passenger seat to breach the gap and portable passenger assist handles that fit on the door jamb to make it easier to get in and out. Volunteer drivers will help where they can but are not trained in assisting disabled people, so those needing significant help may need to bring an escort with them.

As well as conventional cars, HECCC has a wheelchair accessible vehicle. This is fitted with a ramp at the back enabling a wheelchair or some mobility scooter to be loaded. This vehicle has seating for 5 passengers as well as the scooter or wheelchair and the driver, allowing family and friends to go out together. To use the service, wheelchairs and mobility scooters must have been crash tested and either have the carabiner sticker on mounting points, or be able to show this in the manual. Volunteer drivers are all trained to load and unload chairs and scooters, and can do this for you.

Community Transport Sussex (CTS) 

CTS are keen to hire out minibuses to community and not-for-profit organisations and friends’ groups who get free membership.  A driver can be provided if required (subject to availability) or a volunteer driver with a D1 license can be registered. 

All vehicles have tail-lifts which are parallel to the floor and are wheelchair accessible.  If you stay in your wheelchair, the chair must have been crash tested and either have the carabiner sticker on mounting points or be able to show this in the chair’s manual.  Mobility scooters can also be transported if no bigger than 130cm long x 81cm wide, but you must sit in a bus seat for the journey, and the scooter is strapped down.  Members with or without disabilities are welcome.
